18th century farmer Jón Einarsson cohabited with glaciers and volcanoes, where he perfected this beautiful pattern with modest tools. He lived through the disastrous Skaftár Fires 1783-1785, the largest eruption recorded in history. Crops failed in Europe, resulting in skyrocketing bread prices, ultimately leading to the French Revolution. The original pattern book is preserved in the National Museum of Iceland.
